The cheapest automation a school can ship this week

If you can only afford to automate one thing as an Indian school in 2026, automate this. ~₹0.50 per parent per month, ships in an afternoon.

This week

If I were starting from zero at an Indian K-12 school today, I would build one thing first: a 9:30 AM WhatsApp broadcast to the parent of every absent student.

It's not glamorous. It's not "AI". It will pay for the whole automation budget by month two.

Why this one

Three reasons:

  1. The work is invisible until you do it. Right now your front-desk spends 30 minutes every morning fielding "is my kid in school?" calls. You don't see this as a cost because the front-desk is already there. But it's the reason the office can't get to the actual work — fee follow-up, enrolment leads, vendor coordination.
  2. The payback is immediate. Parents notice within a week. The first message of the academic year that says "Aanya was marked absent today. If this is incorrect, please reply." will do more for your school's reputation than a redesigned website.
  3. The build cost is rounding error. One Google Sheet. One Apps Script. One pre-approved WhatsApp template. About ₹312 per month in template fees for a school of 800.

The hard part isn't the script

I publish the full 30-line script in the blog. It's not the bottleneck.

The hard part is the data shape. Class teachers need to be marking attendance in a structured way — one tab, one row per student per day — before any of this works. Many schools have attendance buried in physical registers, paper notebooks, or three different WhatsApp groups.

Step zero, then: sit with the senior teacher and design the attendance sheet they'll actually fill in. Five columns: Student ID, Class, Parent Phone, Status, Marked At. That's it. If you try to capture everything in this sheet you'll capture nothing.

Once that's working for two weeks, the automation drops in on top.

One number to keep an eye on

After two weeks of running this, ask the front-desk: "How many calls about attendance came in this week?" If the answer isn't a 70%+ drop, the broadcast isn't actually firing — check your WhatsApp template approval and your Apps Script trigger logs.
